My inspiration comes from an image where I see a woman often standing behind an ancient Chinese classical timber screen. Although she is not clearly visible her silhouette is definite in portraying an elegant and confident and rather mysterious woman. Almost ghostlike, she wanders up and down the corridors gracefully content within her own environment. As she passes by the timber screen, in which the texture and the light changes reflecting her thoughts and emotion. In today’s society, millions of people live and work behind screens of glass aluminum all dressed in skirts and suites. Although the glass is much more transparent than the wood carving screen, the people thoughts and emotions are more obscure, only portraying images of fake confidence trapped in a world of conformity.
My inspiration comes from Chinese Opera and Japanese Yakuza that gave me an idea about the combination between lady and gangster, feminine and masculine, floral and weapon, soft and hard. Those helped me to create my muse who always comes with an elegant attitude and her principle is no matter in what situation and where, to always remains elegant (event under a violent situation still remains so). She is more like a spy or killer and makes people feel she is feminine, mysterious, confident and dangerous (in French term called Femme fatale) and that is also most women’s desire. So, I want to satisfy their desire and let their dream come true. In my collection, I use guns and bullet shapes to create a lace pattern and print it on jersey and polyester fabric to create draped and sculptured shapes; I also use leather to create triangular pleats and laser cut the leather with gun and bullet shapes. For the color, instead of using black and white color to explore the mysteries, I use the color tones to create my own mysteries. That also gives people new ideas about feminine, mystery, confidence and danger.
This theme is called: ‘Explosion’ which can describe as human emotion or chemical reaction. I try to create a form to show explosions in a very artistic way. At the beginning I searched the meaning of explosion to understand properly. Later I looked at videos about chemical reaction, research on colour, art pieces, animation, photos and so on also the reaction on people when they lose their temper that helps me to explore my creation. I think that is very interesting and then I started folding and colouring my material. Once I decided my pattern, I started to drape them in different ways and try to create the mood. I think this project I can create more especially the colour can be brighter and the form can be bigger.
My inspiration comes from the mountain’s beauty. The impression for the mountain is hard, tough, high and strong. However, when you look closely, they have more than that. They are elegant, feminine, with multiple looks, and grace. That sounds like women, who look gentle and soft but actually they are the opposite. In my collection I use the organza and polyester fabric to represent women’s gentleness and feminine. The geometric laser cutting, which represent the toughness for the women. The multiple layers show women’s diversity. I use navy and grey color in this collection, which express the elegance and grace for the women. These combinations unfold into a unique display of mystery, elegance, confidence and poetry. I want to express that, although life is ambiguous and there is lots of difficulty and uncertainty, women are always face the problem and conquer each step and just like a mountain does not fall.
I was inspired by the under water creatures who have very interesting ways to protect themselves. They are very sensitive, when they are in danger, they will immediately wear their armor or their second skin, which changes into different skin colour or some change the texture of the skin. In this project, I use unique smocking technique combined with bonded organza fabric with cotton material, which creates very unique textile. That just likes under water creatures change texture of the skin. These days, a lot of people wear their second layer. Different layers have their own ways to protect themselves and have their own meaning, which can show reputation, class, honor and identity. Sometimes I wonder does people really need the second layer to protect them or it just their pride or desire?
My inspiration came for one of the future interior designs, which was called ‘machines can read’. However, not entirely inspired by the idea of future living designs, I was able to draw some inspiration from the atmosphere that is created by using geometric shapes. Shape always associates with sharp, metal, hard but the way they are used in this interior design is the opposite way and that also can be found in different area of design such as architecture design, industrial design and others, which normally use hard materials to create the movement or emotion in their design. Hence, I will explore the softness from the shapes to create a gentle mood in my design. The repeating, balance, rhythm, scale, which will frequently appear in this collection will also explore my gentle shapes idea. In my pattern design, the shape will combine with transparent and soft fabrics or different shaped textile matched with each other or plain fabric manipulated with shaped textiles, which will be mixed with brown, gold, orange, cream, white and other warm colors to smooth the shape pattern and it will help to create harmony mood in my collection.
My design was inspired by the optical art, in which I found several interesting elements and the Rhythm is one of my favorite elements, so in my work, I show different types of rhythm. First one is color rhythm from the grey to black and then to very light grey. The second one is the size rhythm from normal size to large size then to the very small. The last one but not least is the proportion, which from the 2D proportion changing to 3D form and then to 2D proportion again. These are my ways to express my view of rhythm that just like music comes slowly into our ear with harmony and softness then the melody slowly changes from soft to high peaks (which is just like this 3D area). After this excitement, the high peaks change to low peaks, which come with softness then move to nothing (as you can see from this light grey area, I use color and proportion to express that kind of mood).
In conclusion, from my starting point, I wanted to create optical textile but after I did some research, some designers had already done it. So I think I can use my way to express the optical art, which may not trick people’s eye but come with optical elements and use those element to create my own rhythm and my own melody.
My design was inspired by my ‘rhythm project’ and the optical art, which I found there is another way to express rhythm, which is SMOCKING. I created my own hexagon-smocking pattern from wide to narrow to wide again and it has biomimicry look. Hexagon smocking by gathers fabric to create an optical illusion of a hexagon shape. When I draped this on the mannequin, that pattern gave a volume to the garment and looked very unique. It created a fake fullness to the garment. Usually, the optical textile trick people eyes by using 2D form. But in my project, I used traditional technique smocking to create this illusion. Different sizes of hexagons combined together create a unique motif. The rhythm from this pattern has a sequence just like repeating the same music again and again.
‘Second hand political’ is one of Hany Armanious’s artworks, designed in 1995. The artist uses woods, metal, plastic, and other materials to present these interesting pieces. In this artwork, there is one of outstanding object, which looks like a campfire. The line and the form are very natural without any artificialness. That inspires my design. In this collection, the contrast between roughness and smoothness, sharpness and softness creates unique textiles. These days, people even live a harsh life but they still have hope and faith in their life, never give up. The softness and smoothness is just like hope to guide them to move further. The color white represents the pureness and clearness. I also use a pleated technique combined with embroidery breading that creates a very feminine and elegant look.
For this mini project, I used second hand trousers to create this floral outfit. The wool and polyester lining create a unique pattern. The repeating motifs cross around the neck and then to the front. This outfit creates a sorrowful mood by using different black colours, shining and metallic black. The pattern I created, which has flower looks. The impression for the flower is happiness, but when you lose it, the cheerful memories are losing their original colour to become dark colour just like these flowers.
The name for this collection was “FABULOUS” which was inspired by Mod culture, which sought to bring out the ambiguity for Woman’s nature--- hardness and softness. These two elements bring very strong contrast to explore the ambiguity from woman’s nature in my design. I used geometric pattern with flare and cut through technique to bring the hard- ness and softness together also it shows the beauty of a woman’s body. The pleats display woman’s strong and confident nature with some elegant and delightful. The silhouettes such as wild leg pants, high neck or boyish jackets were been combined with masculine and feminine elements to bring out the coolness, pizazz, capability and experienced. The colors used are navy color and creamy light pink to show the hardness and softness of a woman’s nature, which also brings each garment its own characteristic. The philosophy for this collection is “Looks fabulous and show your charm”.
